Elephantoidea is a taxonomic group that contains the elephants as well as their closest extinct relatives, including stegodontids and "tetralophodont gomphotheres", the latter of which are otherwise placed in Gomphotheriidae. An autapomorphic feature of the group is the presence of a checkerboard pattern formed by dentinal tubules.
