Plants, genus Paeonia, grown for their flowers.
Peony (or paeony) are plants of genus Paeonia, the only genus in the Paeoniaceae family. There are between 25 and 40 species, although species definitions are not distinct.
Peonies are native to Asia, southern Europe, and western North America. Most are herbaceous perennials although some resemble small trees. Leaves are compound and deeply lobed. They are grown for their large, usually fragrant flowers. Flower colors range from red to pink to white to yellow, and are typically in late spring or early summer.
Herbaceous peonies are propagated by root division or seed. Tree peonies can also be divided by grafting and cuttings.
