Fungi (singular: fungus) constitute a complete biological kingdom (ie. the same level of classification as "animals" and "plants"). Fungi are divided into Eumycota (true fungi), myxomycetes (slime molds), and oomycetes ( molds).

Mycology (the study of fungi) is often considered a branch of botany, although in reality fungi are more closely related to animals than plants.

Fungi are rarely visible as they feed on and dead matter. They often only become visible when they produce a fruiting body such as a mushroom or mold.

Many kinds of mushroom are , and a gardener can grow mushrooms for eating. Questions about growing mushrooms should use the tag.

Fungi can also pose problems for gardeners in the form of various plant and molds, and will often look like a viral or bacterial infection. Use this tag for all questions about dealing with infections.

Is this heavy blue-green growth on my tree trunk and branches a form of lichen?
