The term Protoheterotrichida derives from the three ancient Greek words πρῶτος (prôtos), meaning "first, earliest, most prominent", ἕτερος (héteros), meaning "another, different", and θρίξ, τριχός (thríx, trikhós), meaning "hair", in reference to the potential evolutionary affinities of these ciliates with the heterotrichs.
