I'm your typical UNIX SA turned engineer turned architect turned... So, I'm a cranky jack of all trades. I've been a computer hobbyist since I was 7 (so, a long time, now) and have been getting paid to do my hobby for over two decades, now.
The most common remarks I hear from other people in my field are:
- Wait, you were a psychology major in college
- Huh... Didn't know you could actually do that
- How did you end up doing 'X' for 'Y' (see first common remark)
- You're the first person I've seen bring our stuff to its knees (benchmarking is fun)
Mostly, I like seeing how far I can push technology until I break it ...and then write up how to push things that far, how to recover from the breakage and then file bug-reports and or patches with the maintainer of whatever it was I found a corner-case for. I do the writeups because it's usually the only place I'm going to be able to Google if I ever run into the problem again.
