I consider myself a multidisciplinary scholar, though with the expansion and formalization of the field of data science, that characterization seems to be losing meaning over time. My main passions are in mathematical optimization with a focus in combinatorial optimization and mixed-integer programming, heuristics, artificial intelligence with a focus in reinforcement learning, and time series analysis.
I have secondary background / interests in computability and complexity, networks / graph theory, optimal control, signals & systems, scientific computation, mathematical modeling, other flavors of machine learning, data structures and algorithms, information theory, and various topics in statistics and discrete mathematics.
I have active, non-professional interests in biology (particularly genetics, population dynamics, and evolution), NEMS / nanotechnology, and cosmology to name a few. I also consider myself an amateur enthusiast of linguistics, debate, rhetoric, and a few different circles of philosophy (epistemology, causality, meta-ethics, and of course logic and the philosophy of mathematics).
I'm currently Technical Director and chief data scientist at a startup company producing software that annotates recorded audio conversations and classifies the emotions being expressed to predict future business outcomes, either specifically involving one or both of the participants or extrapolated to similar target audiences. Our research has expanded to develop products at a 'macro' level, either with respect to time scales (e.g. aggregating data and model output over individual interactions to predict personal actions such as job abandonment) or larger populations (e.g. consumer segmentation for prioritizing customer outreach activity).
I aspire to work on problems that will help advance the human species to the next level of civilization and, dare I say, the next step in our evolution. This involves not just working on advancing the technological state of the art, but also in promoting widespread personal growth, both intellectually and morally, and improving collective intelligence.
