My background is in factory automation. I'm relatively new to Desktop IDE's, but I've got about 10 years of experience programming on PLC's (specifically archetecture work) coding software to run factory processes. I've got an EE background so I don't have the formal CS training past what was available to me at the high school level, but I've always had a good instinct for writing good structured code, and now I'm transitioning to a Visual Studio environment.
