I grew up with Isaac Asimov and reading the Amazing science fiction magazine.

I'm amazed that Asimov's and Cordwainer Smith's dreams of short distance mobile and hand held communication devices are now not just a reality, but are also the foundation stone for everyday usage by the world's peoples.

This began in the 1970's I became a Technical Officer with the Australian Post Master General's (PMG) Department, chased Citizen Band (CB) radio pirates, and helped prevent radio interference to people's new television receivers.

In 1978 I was loaned by the PMG to help Papua New Guinea plan their use of the radio spectrum for the next 20 years. I became a generalist by learning everything from submarines to satellites. One day I was loaned a copy of The Bell System Technical Journal which described Unix and the "C Programming Language" and the beginnings of the modern day Internet.

In 1979 I was honored to be a Member of PNG's delegation to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) "World Administrative Radio Conference" which planned the use of the world's radio spectrum particularly for Australia's first commercial and defence satellite systems. I attended many later ITU conferences concerning new mobile, space and wifi radiocommunication technologies.

Along the way I've learnt BASIC, C, Fortran, C++, SQL, Unix, Java, Red Hat Linux etc etc. Currently I'm having fun with Python and have become a science fiction addic. No, I've never got a university degree.

Today, I'm retired but having fun learning Python the hard way. I'm really grateful to stackoverflow community members who have answered so many queries I've had while learning Python. Thanks very much guys!
