I have an Azure infrastructure set up with Hub-spoke virtual network topology. In the spoke network I have an AKS cluster with workload identity enabled. Within the cluster I have deployed a few microservices, each running ASP.NET Core with the most recent version. Initially I was using access keys and users in the connection strings to reach different PaaS services that the microservice needs access to (like Cosmos Db, SignalR, Service Bus or SQL Server etc.) and all was working fine. Then I started implementing passwordless connection using the Azure.Identity library for each .NET client where it wasn't already implemented. I also set up the necessary user-assigned managed identities for these microservices and the ServiceAccount for each in AKS following the official MS documentations. Managed to make all working fine, except for Azure SQL Server... In theory there is nothing to do on the .NET Client side of things, as the Microsoft.EntityFrameworkCore (version 7.0.9 at the time of writing) already supports authenticating with DefaultAzureCredential.

Created a user-assigned managed identity and federated identity credential using Terraform:

In SQL Server I created a contained SQL user with the following script:

Looking at the environment variables in the pod I can see the variables for workload identity have been set correctly: Workload identity environment variables

When using Authentication="Active Directory Managed Identity" in the connection string, it works fine... also with SQL login (username and password), so I don't think there is a problem reaching the SQL Server. I also have an Azure function with system-assigned managed identity using Active Directory Default in the connection string and it's also working fine.

I'm not sure if this is a bug, as I think I've configured everything correctly.
