I'm pretty new to this and I'm building a small fan that connects to an Android phone via the USB C charging port and receives power from it via OTG. In addition, I need to build an Android app that will count the number of times the fan turned on - every time the fan's button is pressed, a signal will be sent and the app will recognize it and add to the count. What options exist for communication between the two devices? Do I need a microcontroller or a bluetooth / wifi component to communicate or is there a cheaper and more efficient way (for mass production) to send this signal? (I thought it was possible to add sort of resistor to connect certain pins in the USB C plug)

thanks for helping

I know it is possible to make the devices communicate using a microcontroller / Bluetooth / WiFi, but is there a simpler and cheaper way?
