How to implement a Progress Bar using PyQt5?

Question

I'm using PyQt5 and I want to know how to implement a progress bar, so the user can see the progress of a certain function that takes several minutes to complete. I want the progress bar to be displayed in a new window, and to start the % when the code enters the line variable = self.complicated_function().

I'm new to PyQt5. I've done some research and I've seen some examples which use threads, but I don't know how they work. Here is part of the whole code, when you press the button toolButton it calls the function complicated_function. I would like to know the progress of this function.

NEVER MODIFY the code generated by Qt Designer.
Create another class that inherits from the corresponding widget and use the generated class to populate it.

The QThread class provides a platform-independent way to manage threads.
