During compilation of openssl-1.1.1n under Linux cognavision 5.10.103-v8+ #1529 SMP PREEMPT Tue Mar 8 12:26:46 GMT 2022 aarch64 GNU/Linux with newest wersion (2.31.1-16) of binutils I was expecting this to build as per openssl installation instructions instead the ar error generated appears to be a problem form binutils version 2.23 see https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-binutils/2011-10/msg00029.html which should have been patched in 2011.
