I'm trying to call from one controller to another in JavaFX. I have done this in another part of my code in pretty much exactly the same way and it worked, but for some reason it isn't working here.

    public void showPrimaryAbilityInfo() throws IOException
    {
        String abilityName = primaryAbilityButtonText.getText() ;

        FXMLLoader loader = new FXMLLoader(getClass().getResource("AbilityInfo.fxml")) ;
        root = loader.load() ;

        AbilityInfoController abilityInfoController = loader.getController() ;
        abilityInfoController.setAbilityNameText(abilityName);

        Stage stage = new Stage() ;
        stage.setScene(new Scene(root)) ;
        stage.show() ;
    }

I'm getting the FXML resource and loading it, but when I call abilityInfoController.setAbilityNameText(abilityName); it gives me the following error saying abilityInfoController is NULL:

    It would appear that method `getController()` (in class `FXMLLoader`) is returning null. Are you sure that file `AbilityInfo.fxml` contains `fx:controller` attribute? It may help people answer your question if you post contents of file `AbilityInfo.fxml`. – Abra Jan 13 '22 at 03:42
  • Oh wow. That's such a simple fix. That worked perfectly, thank you! I just started using JavaFX so this is all really new to me. – William Harrison Jan 13 '22 at 03:55

It appears I made a rather simple mistake. My FXML associated with the controller didn't have a Controller declared. Problem has been resolved!
