Just moved this Joomla 1.6 install over from iPower to Network Solutions. Moved a 1.5 install previously and it was okay. This one not so much. So when I turn on SEF Friendly URLs it's okay. When I turn on URL Rewriting to get rid of that annoying index.php in the URL, it says page not found. So...

http://hostname/a-z/index.php/about-a-and-z - WORKS!

http://hostname/a-z/about-a-and-z - DOESN'T WORK

Note: everything was working fine on the old site...

Anyone have any thoughts?

My HTACCESS FILE is as follows:

  • It is possible that mod_rewrite is not enabled on your hoster .. or .htaccess file has to have different name (for security reasons). Please contact your hosting company and ensure the aforementioned -- I do not see anything wrong with this file (after quick overview). – LazyOne Aug 02 '11 at 21:35

I got it to work with using: RewriteBase /a-z Forgot it was in a subdirectory.

In my case, I made two things in order to enable the links without the index.php in the URL:

  • Install the rewrite mod in your Apache: sudo a2enmod rewrite
  • Check the configuration in you apache2.conf in /etc/apache2 <Directory /var/www/> Options Indexes FollowSymLinks AllowOverride All Require all granted

It's very critical to have AllowOverride All if you want to use the rewrite with your links.

This formula works for me

Are you sure that mod_rewrite is turned on?

  • RewriteEngine On -- That would do it, no? – Dave Rottino Aug 02 '11 at 21:41

No. This won't help if there is no mod_rewrite on the server. Try to execute``, look on the 'Apache loaded modules' section and check if 'mod_rewrite' is listed there. – Ruslan Polutsygan Aug 02 '11 at 21:47
  • It looks like it is not. It looks like each file has to actually exist or it errors out! I'm trying these tricks but to no avail. http://www.mainelydesign.com/blog/view/network-solutions-htaccess-mod_rewrite-rewriterule-flawed – Dave Rottino Aug 02 '11 at 21:55

I think it is bad idea. Check this http://stackoverflow.com/questions/975262/pretty-urls-without-mod-rewrite-without-htaccess . It would be much better to move to the hosting with 'mod_rewrite'. Or you could use urls like `http://site.com/index.php/almost/sef/link/to/the/page`. – Ruslan Polutsygan Aug 02 '11 at 22:12
  • Called Network Solutions, they said they have it enabled across their servers. I got it to work with using: RewriteBase /a-z Forgot it was in a subdirectory. Now on to tackle those images that are not showing up. – Dave Rottino Aug 02 '11 at 22:30
  • Really in the subdomain. How I've missed it - don't know. What images are you talking about? – Ruslan Polutsygan Aug 03 '11 at 07:09
  • I think adding /a-z to your RewriteBase should've taken care of the images that didn't show up. Did it not? – Hanny Aug 04 '11 at 15:48
