I am new to springboot and I have not found the answer I am looking for in the web. Clever cloud provides 100mb of free mysql storage, once you register to it, you get the uri, the username, database name, password, the usual database stuffs.

My springboot application is working perfectly fine with local database connection, I am using hibernate. The code I have is

spring.datasource.url=jdbc:mysql://localhost:3306/mydatabase
spring.datasource.username=root
spring.datasource.password=root

spring.jpa.hibernate.ddl-auto=update
spring.jpa.show-sql=true

But I want to connect this to the clever cloud's mysql service. I have no idea how it's done. Please help. Maybe i require some dependencies and the code in application.properties changes?

pom.xml dependencies that I have

<dependencies>

        <dependency>
            <groupId>org.springframework.boot</groupId>
            <artifactId>spring-boot-starter-jdbc</artifactId>
        </dependency>
        <dependency>
            <groupId>org.springframework.boot</groupId>
            <artifactId>spring-boot-starter-web</artifactId>
        </dependency>

        <dependency>
            <groupId>org.projectlombok</groupId>
            <artifactId>lombok</artifactId>
            <optional>true</optional>
        </dependency>
        <dependency>
            <groupId>org.springframework.boot</groupId>
            <artifactId>spring-boot-starter-test</artifactId>
            <scope>test</scope>
        </dependency>

        <!-- https://mvnrepository.com/artifact/org.springframework.boot/spring-boot-starter-jdbc -->
        <dependency>
            <groupId>org.springframework.boot</groupId>
            <artifactId>spring-boot-starter-jdbc</artifactId>

        </dependency>

        <!-- https://mvnrepository.com/artifact/org.springframework.boot/spring-boot-starter-data-jpa -->
        <dependency>
            <groupId>org.springframework.boot</groupId>
            <artifactId>spring-boot-starter-data-jpa</artifactId>

        </dependency>

        <!-- https://mvnrepository.com/artifact/mysql/mysql-connector-java -->
        <dependency>
            <groupId>mysql</groupId>
            <artifactId>mysql-connector-java</artifactId>

        </dependency>
    </dependencies>

After the inclusion of clever clouds uri and user and all other things:

spring.datasource.url=uri_provided by clever cloud not keeping this coz i will be using this
spring.datasource.username=username
spring.datasource.password=password

spring.jpa.hibernate.ddl-auto=update
spring.jpa.show-sql=true

I get this error only when i change the uri user and password to the clever clouds uris user and password. Also this uri user and password works perfectly fine when i connect it with mysql cmd.

  • You wrote you got the uri from your provider - use it! – Shadow Mar 07 '21 at 11:11
  • doesnt work, yes i can connect it from mysql cmd but maybe i need some extra dependencies on springboot? – Noob_coder Mar 07 '21 at 11:29

    No, you do not. Rather than asking a vague how to question, which we cannot really answer anyway, you should specify your code you are using to connect to the remote mysql server along with the exact error message. "Does not work" is not a proper description of the error. (Of course, you should make an attempt to look the error up on the Internet, there is a high chance of finding related questions!) – Shadow Mar 07 '21 at 11:32
  • Can you clarify why you have this in your settings? “ spring.datasource.url=uri_provided by clever cloud not keeping this coz i will be using this”. You need to put the JDBC URI there. Earlier in the question you do show having the URI there. So the information provided is a little confusing. Can you clarify? – Michael Mar 07 '21 at 14:10

    @Michael I have found the answer, it was coz the exlusion of jdbc, I looked upon some sites and some of them mentioned to download some maven dependencies if we are using cloud services for mysql so i was kinda confused with what i should have done, but my solution was that i missed the jdbc. I am still not familiar with the debugging of springboot coz i am a self learner, so sorry to have posted something as simple as this. – Noob_coder Mar 07 '21 at 14:15

  • @Michael there is nothing there that would prohibit encouraging OPs to do some research, as long as we do not do it a condescending way. I don't think I did it that way. However, you should also consider, if your reaction was appropriate. – Shadow Mar 07 '21 at 19:38

I would guess that you used the url they gave you without prepending the jdbc protocol to it.

In your local config jdbc:mysql://localhost:3306/mydatabase, localhost:3306/mydatabase is the URL.

So if the provided URL looks like clever-host:3306/mydatabase, you would need to write jdbc:mysql://clever-host:3306/mydatabase

I can tell this because you've got this log line:

"Caused by: java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: URL must start with 'jdbc'"
