Scenario :

  1. I am maintaining a table to store login information such as how many times the user has tried to login, how many failed attempts and how many times the captcha has been generated for a specific user. These are identified by unique keys in the table such as user email followed by their operation name such as user_email_login_attempt,user_email_failed_attempt,user_email_captcha_attempt
  2. On each login attempt, I check whether the above login key exists in the table using the findByLoginKey query, if object is not null I just update the count using logininfo.save(loginInfo) with count updated, if the object is null then I insert it as a new entry with the respective login key

Issue

When 50 concurrent request for login is fired using jmeter using same user credentials, then I am getting the deadlock exception

  • There are various data I maintain on the same table like login count, login failed count etc, so I just suffixed them with emailid. i enabled show SQL true but not able to see the SQL statement. I'm looking at the cause why its not happening – vishal sundararajan Dec 08 '20 at 06:22
  • There's a better approach. Use the email in the login_key and use [UPSERT](https://vladmihalcea.com/how-do-upsert-and-merge-work-in-oracle-sql-server-postgresql-and-mysql/) to mark the login attempt. – Vlad Mihalcea Dec 08 '20 at 06:34

  • You won't need the @Lock because the UPSERT will block anyway. The key is to use the email in the UPSERT WHERE clause. – Vlad Mihalcea Dec 08 '20 at 08:05
  • It seems the UPSERT is not working since i'm using deferred mode and postgres does not support UPSERT with deferred mode. also if i ignore the insert exceptions the login attempt count will go wrong.   • Deferred is something we use to check for table constraints after the transaction is completed, this will be useful if we delete and insert with same unique key in a single transaction. but generally how will we update the login attempt count if same user credentials is used from different systems. we cannot use UPSERT because we need to increment the values even if the request has arrived concurrently at the same time. i was doing this with redis without any issues but due to hardware constraints i had to drop it – vishal sundararajan Dec 08 '20 at 18:59
