I have a simple SpringBoot app setup up with Spring initializer and has the regular folder structure . enter image description here

I have a application.properties file in src/main/resources with one entry in it

app.version=1.0.0

I have a simple class to pick up the property in src/main/java/foo

I have a simple test in src/test/java/foo

I am getting a null pointer exception when I run the test.

    Your conclusion is wrong. You believe that it is not picking up property from properties file, but the problem is that the `@Autowired` in `PropertyInjectionTest` is not being resolved, so field `propertyInjection` is null. How is `PropertyInjectionTest` instantiated? Seems like it might be instantiated by jUnit directly, maybe, and not by Spring. Perhaps you should (re)read the guides for writing test code in Spring: [Spring - Unit Testing](https://docs.spring.io/spring-batch/docs/current/reference/html/testing.html#testing) – Andreas Mar 12 '20 at 15:22

    That's fine, but you forgot to annotate the test class, so Spring can do its job. – Andreas Mar 12 '20 at 15:28
