I'm working on some Mac software that requires the browser to be closed in order to properly install. Instead of asking the user to shutdown their browser during the install process, i would prefer just to complete the install after the user's next reboot.

Is there a supported method for installing these files after reboot? If not, are there any workarounds that would achieve the same goal ( launchd, launchctl )?

Since most modern browsers can save their state (i.e. restore tabs) between sessions, it probably wouldn't be a huge issue to request a browser restart to complete the install. Plus, Mac users don't often restart their machines since they "sleep" so nicely when not being used. I frequently go a month or more between reboots on my MacBook Pro. Requesting a restart to complete software installation on a Mac would be sacrilege. – Austin May 10 '11 at 22:59
  • To provide something more constructive, are your users going to be installing your software and wanting to use it immediately? Do you really want to force a reboot if they are? (and yes, they are.) – aehiilrs May 10 '11 at 23:05
