What's the right way to set up the Spring Cloud project with the functions and unit testing?

I want to create a standalone web application with Spring Cloud Function and have a possibility to cover it by the unit tests. I've set it up according to the reference guide:

  1. I created the maven project with the spring-boot-starter-parent.
  2. Added spring-cloud-dependencies to a dependencyManagement.
  3. Added spring-cloud-starter-function-web starter.
  4. Added testing dependencies:
    • Added junit-bom for the 5th version to a dependencyManagement.
    • Added spring-boot-starter-test starter and excluded junit from it.
    • Added junit-jupiter and mockito-junit-jupiter dependencies.

My FunctionapApplication contains the bean uppercase as function, the exmaple from docs. I'm trying to make a test for it.

@ExtendWith(SpringExtension.class)
@FunctionalSpringBootTest
@AutoConfigureWebTestClient
class FunctionsApplicationTest {

  @Autowired
  WebTestClient client;

  @BeforeEach
  void setUp() {
    // set up
  }

  @Test
  void shouldCallFunctionViaWeb() {
    client.post().uri("/").body("foo", String.class).exchange()
      .expectStatus().isOk().expectBody(String.class).isEqualTo("FOO");
  }

}

But it fails to start a context and finds WebTestClient:

org.springframework.beans.factory.UnsatisfiedDependencyException: Error creating bean with name 'com.example.file.FunctionsApplicationTest': Unsatisfied dependency expressed through field 'client'; nested exception is org.springframework.beans.factory.NoSuchBeanDefinitionException: No qualifying bean of type 'org.springframework.test.web.reactive.server.WebTestClient' available: expected at least 1 bean which qualifies as autowire candidate. What am I doing wrong?

UPDATE
I guess the issue with @AutoConfigureWebTestClient and injecting WebTestClient.

Oleg, your question is a bit unclear in its title since it appears you explicitly want to deploy your function as web endpoint and test it as such. So that's different then "how to test spring functions". Anyway, we probably need to update our docs a bit to make it clear but here it is.

Suppose this is your application:

@SpringBootApplication
public class SampleFunctionApplication {

    public static void main(String[] args) {
        SpringApplication.run(SampleFunctionApplication.class, args);
    }

    @Bean
    public Function<String, String> uppercase() {
        return v -> v.toUpperCase();
    }
}

If your intention is to interact with uppercase function as web endpoint, then here is the test:

@SpringBootTest(classes = SampleFunctionApplication.class,
            webEnvironment = WebEnvironment.RANDOM_PORT)
public class WebFunctionTests {

    @Autowired
    private TestRestTemplate rest;

    @Test
    public void test() throws Exception {
        ResponseEntity<String> result = this.rest.exchange(
            RequestEntity.post(new URI("/uppercase")).body("hello"), String.class);
        System.out.println(result.getBody());
    }
}

and dependency segment from POM:

    <parent>
        <groupId>org.springframework.boot</groupId>
        <artifactId>spring-boot-starter-parent</artifactId>
        <version>2.2.2.RELEASE</version>
        <relativePath/> <!-- lookup parent from repository -->
    </parent>
    . . . .
    <dependency>
        <groupId>org.springframework.cloud</groupId>
        <artifactId>spring-cloud-function-web</artifactId>
        <version>3.0.1.BUILD-SNAPSHOT</version>
    </dependency>
    <dependency>
        <groupId>org.springframework.boot</groupId>
        <artifactId>spring-boot-starter</artifactId>
    </dependency>
    <dependency>
        <groupId>org.springframework.boot</groupId>
        <artifactId>spring-boot-starter-web</artifactId>
        <scope>test</scope>
    </dependency>
    <dependency>
        <groupId>org.springframework.boot</groupId>
        <artifactId>spring-boot-starter-test</artifactId>
        <scope>test</scope>
        <exclusions>
            <exclusion>
                <groupId>org.junit.vintage</groupId>
                <artifactId>junit-vintage-engine</artifactId>
            </exclusion>
        </exclusions>
    </dependency>

If your intention is to only test function as standalone, then all you need to do is inject FunctionCatalog, execute lookup operation and invoke the function. You can reference this test for more info/examples

  • Sorry for have been unclear. I created a few functions, marked them as bean and wanted to cover them by the unit tests. Also, I wanted to check how it handles HTTP requests. I saw in the previous version of docs that I might use a `WebTestClient` for it, but it doesn't work in my example and it couldn't inject the `WebTestClient` bean. – Oleg Koskin Dec 18 '19 at 16:16
  • thanks for your reply. It kinda helps. I can make units test. Unfortunately, `TestRestTemplate` doesn't provide such assertion methods like `MockMvc` or `WebTestClient`. Does Spring Test deploy locally server in your examples? – Oleg Koskin Dec 19 '19 at 10:51
