I have tried to uninstall and reinstall node.js several times in an effort to install npm. I tried Aptitude to try to unravel dependencies to no avail and thought about Synaptic Package Manager, but not sure what to do with it. I get this output every time:

:~$ sudo apt-get install npm

Install npm via nvm instead:

curl -o- https://raw.githubusercontent.com/creationix/nvm/v0.33.11/install.sh | bash

See https://github.com/creationix/nvm
