I tried this command but didn't work

It's best practice to create a virtual environment before installing packages, see http://docs.python-guide.org/en/latest/dev/virtualenvs/

Nevertheless, TL;DR:

pip install --user --upgrade nltk

  • thanks. any more details on why the above is not working? –  Mar 01 '18 at 16:04
  • In short, Mac don't like `sudo` and Mac prefers `pip install --user`. It's an OS thing; it's handling python packages a little differently from how Linux does things =( – alvas Mar 02 '18 at 03:05
  • Perhaps, someone more familiar with Mac quirks can provide you with more information on why `sudo` and `pip` without `--user` is not preferred on Mac. – alvas Mar 02 '18 at 03:07
