GridPane specific Nodes

Question

I tried to find a specific node using GridPane.getRowIndex(node).

But I encountered the following error:

Google couldn't help me and I failed to resolve it on my own. node is not null. I get node with GridPane.getChildren().

GridPane.getRowIndex returns a Integer. The value returned can be null, which has the same meaning as a value of 0.

From what I can tell you're probably doing automatical unboxing to primitive type int, i.e. something like this

int row = GridPane.getRowIndex(node);

Unboxing a Integer will be converted to a call to Integer.intValue() which can yield a NPE.

The following 2 code snippets will result in the same bytecode:

Integer i = null;
int primitiveI = i.intValue(); // => NPE

and

Integer i = null;
int primitiveI = i; // => NPE, just harder to see the reason

Note that a similar conversion happens, if GridPane.getRowIndex is part of a expression that requires int operands such as addition or multiplication or the invocation of a method that takes int as parameter.
