TFS 2015 (on premise) vNext build fails but xaml build works

Question

I have configured new build server for TFS 2015, My Xaml build runs just fine, but the vNext build always stuck with status "Waiting for an available agent."

-Agent pool is Green -There is only one build agent configured -I have removed and configured the agent multiple times with no luck

@Eddie-MSFT no, There are no dialogs, When i queue a build, i can see in the queue, but it is stuck in "Waiting for an available agent." forever :( — karthickj25, Oct 25 '16 at 04:48

Hi @Eddie-MSFT , i reinstalled the agent downloaded from web again, But I am getting same log, i can see it says "Leaving ServerDownloader.UpdateNeeded - result = False " in log — karthickj25, Oct 25 '16 at 06:29
unfortunately TFS server is not under my control, I am stuck with this for now. Also I cannot request for TFS upgrade unless I am definite that would solve my problem — karthickj25, Oct 25 '16 at 08:26

Update from OP

It was the Visual studio backgroud agent job service that was causing the issue. After restarting this my agent picked the job.. Many thanks

Please double check the step and configuration of your build agent following this tutorial: Deploy an agent on Windows

Make sure in your build definition you have select the right agent queue. Also try to create a empty build definition with no build task to see if the issue is related to the definition. And also restart your agent service on your TFS server.

If above is still not work, check the event view and the log in \agent_diag on build agent to see whether there are some useful information for trobule shooting.

Make sure the service `Visual Studio Team Foundation Background Job Agent` is running. If not, start it manually and try the build again. Also make sure your agent service is running which is VSO Agent *(your TFS server)* – PatrickLu-MSFT Oct 25 '16 at 07:27

Team Foundation Background Job Agent runs in TFS server, i was looking for it in my build server, and the VSO agent runs fine on build server too. – karthickj25 Oct 25 '16 at 10:42

The issue was indeed with "Visual Studio Team Foundation Background Job Agent" service, restarting it solved my problem, also the emails were not triggering before.. After restart email notifications and build works smoothly. – karthickj25 Oct 27 '16 at 11:41

Compare the build demands against the agent capabilities. If the agent doesn't fulfill the demands it will never build.
