Spring placeholder inside location of PropertyPlaceholderConfigurer

Question

I'm trying to initialize PropertyPlaceholderConfigurer bean with 2 locations. First location has static value, pointing to property file. That file contains a path to dir with the second location. The structure of application context file is like below

The question is, why placeholder ${file2.dir} is not replaced by value from first properties file and how to fix the problem. Of course, there is such property inside first file.

You would get FileNotFoundException because whenever you say ${file2.dir} inside your config file it looks inside the same xml

i.e XML file looks for a property called file2.dir which is part of util.

add the below namespace & contexts into your xml

xmlns:util="http://www.springframework.org/schema/util"

http://www.springframework.org/schema/util     
http://www.springframework.org/schema/util/spring-util-3.0.xsd

define a property like below

<context:property-placeholder
    system-properties-mode="OVERRIDE" properties-ref="environment" />
<util:properties id="environment">
    <b:prop key="file2.dir">YOUR PATH HERE</b:prop>
</util:properties>

I understand you want to push dynamic properties in the property place holder using config XML. I think it may not be possible

may be you can try to have 2 property place holder definitions as provided here
