Eclipse Deployment Assembly jar file - NoClassDefFoundError & ClassNotFoundException

Question

Getting and NoClassDefFoundError and ClassNotFoundException in a Java Spring MVC app, though I think this could happen in any Java app. The class in question is imported from another project via a Deployment Assembly JAR file. I tried every kind of refreshing and cleaning in the book, the problem persisted.

This problem started when I upgraded from Eclipse Luna to Eclipse Mars. The project in question was created under Luna. A colleague who started fresh with Mars is also seeing it though. For him the project was imported from Git in its Luna incarnation.

I went so far as to completely wipe out my Eclipse installation, git repositories (client), everything, and re-import from github, starting all over. Refresh, clean everything, the problem persists! This same project was working fine for months, though I do remember seeing a similar problem a long time ago but it was quickly fixed by adding the project entry in the Deployment Assembly.

In my case, I thought I was seeing that the jar file was being deployed, but I was being misled because I was looking under /Applications/tomcat (Mac). The actual deployment location is (again on my Mac): $HOME/Documents/workspace/.metadata/.plugins/org.eclipse.wst.server.core/tmp0/wtpwebapps

I solved this problem. I'm posting the question and answer in case it helps anyone else. I read dozens of articles here on SO and many other forums, none of which addressed the problem as I encountered it.

I rebuilt the dependency (Deployment Assembly .jar) project from scratch under Mars. I think the project structure expected under Mars is different. The old project (created under Luna) had a main source directory that showed up as "src/main/java" under the main project directory. The same project created under Mars shows just "src" in the same place. Mars was complaining about the source tree structure right away when I switched over to it from Luna. I fixed the errors it was complaining about, but that was apparently not the full extent of the issues.

If it's just showing 'src' instead of 'src/main/java' eclipse isn't recognizing the build path correctly. Right-click on the java folder, and click 'Add to buildpath' – nbrooks Feb 24 '16 at 00:20
From your answer it sounds like you had Eclipse Maven plug-ins installed in Luna but not Mars, or the project was imported differently so they didn't get triggered under Mars. The m2e-wtp plug-ins normally handle bridging the two setups properly. – nitind Feb 24 '16 at 01:01
Thanks. Actually, I *do* have all the Maven plug-ins installed under Mars. One thing I did today was rebuild the project again only this time starting out as a Maven project. Everything seems to work more consistently this way. Before I was creating a regular Java project and then converting it (Project -> Configure -> Convert to Maven Project).
