I deploy gitlab in centos7.1, when in start gitlab there is an error occur: "The GitLab Unicorn web server with pid 9307 is running. The GitLab Sidekiq job dispatcher is not running." I check the sidekiq.log as follow:

Did you verify that the redis password is correct, also it looks like it supposed to be set differently than you have it.

configure redis auth on sidekiq

  • i check my config file so many times.i can use command redis-cli with password login to the redis. – workhardcc Jan 24 '16 at 07:09
  • I'm not sure how to help much more than this. However, it may be that the NOAUTH error is coming from something else than Sidetiq or Sidekiq. Your own code may be using Redis and running into an issue? – Daniel Jan 24 '16 at 15:20
  • thanks! i fix it! i add redis's password in config file :gitlab/config/initializers/4_sidekiq.rb. Then success! – workhardcc Jan 25 '16 at 13:03

I had the same problem on my server. Aptitude reported that the package gitlab can't be installed correctly because of the error "NOAUTH Authentication required." when trying to call the Redis server.

Since I run a public server, I will not use the NOAUTH authentification. I want to use a password for Redis. My config file /etc/redis/redis.conf states (beside other lines):

protected-mode yes
requirepass MyPasswordHere1234567890

I solved following problems:

Problem 1

In the logfile /var/log/syslog I could see following error which prevented aptitude to install the package:

Mar 19 17:11:21 server1 gitlab-sidekiq[647]: 2018-03-19T16:11:21.041Z 647 TID-gtf4ftbyw INFO: Booting Sidekiq 4.2.3 with redis options {:host=>"localhost", :port=>6379, :password=>nil, :namespace=>"resque:gitlab", :url=>nil}
Mar 19 17:11:21 server1 gitlab-sidekiq[647]: NOAUTH Authentication required.

To Fix, I edited /etc/gitlab/initializers/sidekiq.rb and added the line redis_config_hash[:password] = 'MyPasswordHere1234567890' like so:

# Custom Redis configuration
redis_config_hash = Gitlab::Redis.params
redis_config_hash[:namespace] = Gitlab::Redis::SIDEKIQ_NAMESPACE
redis_config_hash[:password] = 'MyPasswordHere1234567890'

Sidekiq.configure_server do |config|
  config.redis = redis_config_hash

Problem 2

After the package was installed, I got another warning:

Running /usr/share/gitlab-shell/bin/check
Check GitLab API access: OK
Access to /usr/share/gitlab/.ssh/authorized_keys: OK

        from /usr/share/gitlab-shell/bin/check:36:in `<main>'
gitlab-shell self-check failed
  Try fixing it:
  Make sure GitLab is running;
  Check the gitlab-shell configuration file:
  sudo -u gitlab -H editor /usr/share/gitlab-shell/config.yml
  Please fix the error above and rerun the checks.

To fix it, I edited /usr/share/gitlab-shell/config.yml and added the parameter pass in the redis section, like so:

redis:
  bin: /usr/bin/redis-cli
  host: 127.0.0.1
  port: 6379
  # pass: redispass # Allows you to specify the password for Redis
  pass: MyPasswordHere1234567890
  database: 0
  # socket: /var/run/redis/redis.sock # Comment out this line if you want to use TCP
  namespace: resque:gitlab
