I am trying to launch an instance in Openstack.

Instance : SecurityOnion.iso

Flavor : 14 GB RAM

Root disk : 20 GB

vCPUS: 5

Host RAM: 20 GB

Host OS: Centos7

When the xUBUNTU security Onion console shows up after I launch the instance on the dashboard, I am unable to work smoothly. The response time is very high, hence facing an issue with the speed. Any suggestions on how to speed it up? What could be the possible factors?

  • This question is too broad to provide any answers. Do other instances launched in your openstack environment experience the same problem? Did you install the openstack environment, or did someone else? Are your physical hosts experiencing high cpu or io load? Do they have enough memory to support the instance? Are you certain it's not a network problem? What sort of diagnostic steps have you performed to narrow down the cause? – larsks Dec 21 '15 at 15:09
  • I have cross verified all the questions that you have mentioned. I am using 5 vCPUS and only 20 % of each core is being utilized when the instance is launched. yes I have tried launching other instances, even they are slow in responding. But right now security onion iso is my top priority. I do not think resource is an issue. I am very new to openstack and would like to have a few suggestions on how to go about diagnosing. – Abhishek0501 Dec 22 '15 at 08:47
  • What is the setting of `virt_type` in `nova.conf` on your compute hosts? – larsks Dec 22 '15 at 14:15
