I know this has been asked so many times but I have tried many solutions with no luck. I have a Rails app deployed on Heroku, it works locally but I get "We're sorry, but something went wrong." when I try to launch it on Heroku.

I have tried

heroku run rake db:migrate
heroku restart
heroku open

but the table already exists in schema

I have tried:

rake db:reset

and rake db:drop db:create db:migrate

I know that by default, changes are done in the development environment, could this be the reason? I'm running the changes in the development env but the 'heroku open' opens the prod env?

Update, the complete snippet for heroku logs: heroku logs

Update: Following on @Vincent's answer, I can tell that the table is not being created on Heroku upon migration, so I tried loading the db from schema.rb since my schema has the table,

$ rake db:schema:load RAILS_ENV=production --trace

** Invoke environment (first_time)
** Execute environment
** Invoke db:load_config (first_time)
** Execute db:load_config

-- create_table("users", {:force=>true})
   -> 0.1565s
-- initialize_schema_migrations_table()

$ heroku restart
Restarting dynos... done
$ heroku open

$ heroku pg:psql

As you can see, the table users wasn't created. Also, schema_migrations is empty.

What am I missing? Why is not the table users being created in the prod env?

  • You will need to add more snippet from your Heroku logs. – x6iae Dec 12 '15 at 05:34
  • Try setting up a end point in app, which does not use database connection and see if it works or not. In case that is working. Then it is issue with migration in production env. You can ensure that by turning on showing error in production env temporarily (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/11601484/rails-error-in-production-mode) – Ashutosh Agrawal Dec 12 '15 at 09:19
  • @SunnyK Done. @AshutoshAgrawal I changed the file, results: ActiveRecord::StatementInvalid in Users#index Showing /app/app/views/users/index.html.erb where line #17 raised: `PG::UndefinedTable: ERROR: relation "users" does not exist LINE 1: SELECT "users".* FROM "users" ^ : SELECT "users".* FROM "users"` It is very similar to this (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/18480283/activerecordstatementinvalid-in-pinsindex-showing-app-app-views-pins-index-h) but the solution didn't work for me, I tried migrating the db then pushing & vice versa! – user1210182 Dec 12 '15 at 16:08
  • did you solve your issue? – DoruChidean Jan 22 '16 at 15:49
  • Unfortunately, I ended up dropping/deleting everything and starting over, not sure why it wasn't working in the first place. – user1210182 Jan 23 '16 at 16:15

It looks like your migrations that you ran on Heroku didn't actually create the table. You can check by running heroku run rails c and try ActiveRecord::Base.connection.tables to list your tables

Sometimes PG will have different effects to migration compared to Sqlite3/MySQL. It is recommended to run PG on local dev to mirror the migration and solve the problem before deployment

  • Thanks for the feedback. You are right, the table is not being created. I tried: `heroku pg:psql` then `\d` to list available databases, I got one table back that is the schema_migrations, and sure enough upon running `select * from schema_migrations;`, it came back with zero rows. I know how to run the app locally by turning on the server and then visiting localhost:3000, how can I run PG on the local dev? – user1210182 Dec 12 '15 at 17:59
  • Check out pages to set up PG. If you are using Ubuntu: [link](https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/how-to-install-and-use-postgresql-on-ubuntu-14-04). Installing PG on a machine tends to be a little bit more hands on. So follow guides to help you set up – Vincent Dec 14 '15 at 17:50

ActionView::Template::Error (PG::UndefinedTable: ERROR: relation "users" does not exist

Probably you deployed the rails app in Heroku missing the database.

For rails > 6: heroku run rails db:migrate
