I'm using this .bash_profile file to know my git status in the command line:

source /usr/local/git/contrib/completion/git-prompt.sh
source /usr/local/git/contrib/completion/git-completion.bash
GIT_PS1_SHOWDIRTYSTATE=true
GIT_PS1_SHOWCOLORHINTS=true

and it does work when I have uncommitted change, the name of the branch is in red color and when I commit the change it changes to green (see image).

Colors in command line

I want to have different color when commits have not been pushed yet. Thanks

  • Do yourself a favor and use something like oh-my-git: https://github.com/arialdomartini/oh-my-git – nwinkler Jul 07 '15 at 12:57
  • To tell you the truth, I didn't like it very much. I like what I have right now, I just want to add an indication that there are un-pushed commits. BTW, oh-my-git doesn't show this information too. – Rotem Jul 07 '15 at 15:26
  • Fair enough. Personally, I use [Bash-it](https://github.com/Bash-it/bash-it) as my prompt. Take a look at this function, it's extracting all of the required information (including ahead/behind) from `git status`: https://github.com/Bash-it/bash-it/blob/master/themes%2Fbase.theme.bash#L87 - this should get you what you're looking for. – nwinkler Jul 07 '15 at 15:33
  • Maybe take a general look at Bash-it - it provides a lot more than that. Some of its themes are similar to what you're using. The [Themes page](https://github.com/Bash-it/bash-it/wiki/Themes) shows most of them using screenshots. – nwinkler Jul 07 '15 at 15:34
  • ok I will take a look on Bash-it. Thanks – Rotem Jul 07 '15 at 15:43
