Hello I am trying to install the starter app for rails-devise-roles from RailsApps. I have done one of their previous basic tutorials, but it has been about four months. I'm not sure if I need to update something. I am using a mac with terminal input.

When I run this command: ails new rails-devise-roles -m https://raw.github.com/RailsApps/rails-composer/master/composer.rb

I get through all the prompts and it starts installing until I get to this error:

Gem::Ext::BuildError: ERROR: Failed to build gem native extension.

checking for ruby/util.h... *** extconf.rb failed ***
Could not create Makefile due to some reason, probably lack of necessary
libraries and/or headers. Check the mkmf.log file for more details. You may

.

Here is the full output of the command.

Results logged to /Users/suzanne/.rvm/gems/ruby-2.1.0@rails-devise-roles/extensions/x86_64-darwin-12/2.1.0-static/bcrypt-3.1.7/gem_make.out

An error occurred while installing bcrypt (3.1.7), and Bundler cannot continue.
Make sure that `gem install bcrypt -v '3.1.7'` succeeds before bundling.

When I run gem install bcrypt -v '3.1.7', it just hangs and nothign happens.

Thanks for any suggestions.

  • You are using Rails version 4.1.0.rc1. Try updating to the current version of Rails (now 4.1.5). See the article [Install Ruby on Rails on Mac OS X Mavericks](http://railsapps.github.io/installrubyonrails-mac.html). – Daniel Kehoe Sep 05 '14 at 21:14
  • Thanks Daniel, I tried it without upgrading fully to Mavericks and the install of ruby & rails seemed to go OK, but still run into trouble with the start app, and still get this error: An error occurred while installing bcrypt (3.1.7), and Bundler cannot continue. Make sure that `gem install bcrypt -v '3.1.7'` succeeds before bundling. I guess upgrading to the new OS version is vital? Just curious if you can explain why or is it that the latest rails requires it? I have been reluctant to upgrade as Octave was not workign for folks after upgrading. Thank you for your time – Shazam Sep 06 '14 at 04:21
  • Some gems (bcrypt? also nokigiri) require compiling using the Unix system software. The system software changes between versions. – Daniel Kehoe Sep 06 '14 at 04:52
  • Thanks Daniel. I upgraded Mavericks and am still getting errors when I follow these tutorials on your site:[Xcode command line tools](http://railsapps.github.io/xcode-command-line-tools.html) <--when I do this I get the old path were xtools seemd to be installed, 'suzanne$ xcode-select -p /Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/Developer'. When I type 'gcc' by itself I get the error 'clang error no input files', but when I type 'gcc --version' I get output similar to what is in your tutorial. running the starter app command 'rails new ... ' I get a new error that rails is not installed. – Shazam Sep 07 '14 at 17:46
  • @DanielKehoe Do I need to "start fresh" somehow and reinstall ruby & rails? Sorry for all the questions. I seem to be constantly having trouble with installation issues and wonder if it is due to an old old old installation of lamp and/or use of homebrew in the past. Thanks agian. – Shazam Sep 07 '14 at 17:51
  • You can try http://apple.stackexchange.com/ for help with your Mac installation questions. You'll need to sort out the local system issues before you go further. – Daniel Kehoe Sep 07 '14 at 18:39
