If Html File Has No Ending "/tr" Tag OR "/td" Tag Then HTML Agility Pack Does Not Read That Information Perfectly

Question

I am using HTML Agility Pack to parse html content. I am using parsing to extract table information. It works. But if there is no ending "/tr" tag or "/td" tag then it does not parse that information perfectly.(in which there is no ending tr tag or td tag.)

Html file is not written by me for which I write parsing code .And I want to write this parsing code such that it can parse any table information written by anybody.I am asking this question because I got such file where there is no end tag. — Harikrishna, Mar 19 '10 at 13:12
Hmm, that is an interesting problem. There are valid reasons for not including ending tags in some cases (Google for example). If you're scraping a page, perhaps ask the owner of the page to correct this? — Forrest Marvez, Mar 19 '10 at 13:37
There is particularly anything you can do, while the HTML parser in HTML agility pack is very resilient of malformed real world HTML (aka "tag soup") it can only do so much. — RobV, Mar 19 '10 at 13:54

Since you tested my other idea and it didn't work, I think you have only two options:

Modify HTML Agility Pack to handle your case, or
Fill in the missing </tr>s yourself.

Here's a regex that might fill in the missing </tr>s for you:

html = Regex.Replace(html, "<tr[^>]*>(?:(?!</?tr>|</tbody>|</table>).)*?(?=<tr[^>]*>|</tbody>|</table>)", "$&</tr>", RegexOptions.Singleline | RegexOptions.IgnoreCase);

(If someone can improve my regex, please feel free.)

It's unreasonable to expect to be able to parse such invalid HTML. I suggest you switch to a regex to pull the data you need. – Jeremy Stein May 25 '10 at 17:11

@Jeremy Stein..It adds end tags but not at the appropriate location If there is a table like `firstrow secondrow` then and we do like `HtmlNode.ElementsFlags.Add("tr",HtmlElementFlag.Closed);` then the table will `firstrow secondrow` instead of `firstrow secondrow` – Harikrishna Mar 20 '10 at 04:50

I wrote a patch to HTML agility Pack that should make it able to deal with all optional end tags (though I permit a block inside a <p> at the moment).

It doesn't have much in the way of testing yet, but you can always give it a shot. It's attached to the following Html Agility Pack bugreport: http://htmlagilitypack.codeplex.com/workitem/29218
