Hi I am new to Netezza and I was asked to develop Custom Java functions and handed the API.

My question is if I can produce the solution with the given requirement. And here is the requirement.

I am given a table, lets name it Table1. I have to read the table by each row and compute different values, and when my values make sense I have to insert it to a different table.

simply I need to read multiple rows, compute multiple values and when the data makes sense I can output it.

So my question is, is this possible to read multiple rows and output very few in Netezza custom Java UDTF functions?

No one helped me so, I went ahead and built the function, and it works fine.

After 3 years I was asked to share the solution. I can't remember the requirement now, I left the company a long time ago too. So I am pasting the 600 line code I programmed, I was naive back then, there could be a better way of doing this. You will be luck if you make sense out of it.

  • @DavidJ It has been more than 3 years but I will try to recall the requirement and maybe it will help you understand my code and help your cause. It is about counting D### network TV views. When some once changes a channel or uses skip or FF or RW or turns it on or off, on demand, recorded shoes, every event is sent back to the cable provider. The provider use this info to compute how may people watched a channel and what ads they watches and what they skipped and for how long. Once computed, they sell this info to ad sales for profit and also is used to find the ratings of any show. – PK0513 May 24 '16 at 19:22
  • Most of the code is to find what to insert to database. I start at the top of the table and process one row at time and insert it to database only when the show is over or user turned off the power. There are other cases like if the user FFX the bit he forwarded is not counted as a view. – PK0513 May 24 '16 at 19:44
  • Remember one show is not one view one show might have more than one view, starting to 10 mins and then pause-- one view, Resume 3 secs FFX- 1 view, resume ->5 mins-> Ad ->1 Min-> SKIP --- 1 view resume--> finish show -- 1 view --> next show and so on. If you can ignore all the logic and the mumbo jumbo going on here, maybe you will find what you need. Hope it helps – PK0513 May 24 '16 at 19:44
