So far I've tried the following commands:

sudo apt-get remove mysql-server mysql-client mysql-common
sudo apt-get purge mysql-server mysql-client mysql-common
sudo apt-get autoremove

But whenever I try to locate MySQL using the following command, I get a list of files related to MySQL:

shell>> locate mysql

Output:

What should I do now?

I am trying to find out if there is any way I can remove all MySQL related files and then re-install MySQL.

I need it for Qt connectivity.

With the command:

sudo apt-get remove --purge mysql\*

you can delete anything related to packages named mysql. Those commands are only valid on debian / debian-based linux distributions (Ubuntu for example).

You can list all installed mysql packages with the command:

sudo dpkg -l | grep -i mysql

For more cleanup of the package cache, you can use the command:

sudo apt-get clean

Also, remember to use the command:

sudo updatedb

Otherwise the "locate" command will display old data.

To install mysql again, use the following command:

sudo apt-get install libmysqlclient-dev mysql-client

This will install the mysql client, libmysql and its headers files.

To install the mysql server, use the command:

sudo apt-get install mysql-server

  • @codeartist Just download the appropriate packets for your distri. It is the cleanest way to go... – glglgl Jun 02 '12 at 10:26

@codeartist : If this answer fix your problem, accept it.Then create new question. Also take a look at unix.stackexchange.com which is for linux/unix questions, SO is for development related questions. – rkosegi Jun 02 '12 at 10:27
  • @glglgl: I am not able to get library files of mysql in /usr/lib while trying to download it through repository. Can you tell me what I should do! My system configuration: OS: ubuntu 12.04 (gnome 3) – codeartist Jun 02 '12 at 10:30
  • @rkosegi: I am looking at unix.stackexchange.com. I will try to update such things from there onwards next time. – codeartist Jun 02 '12 at 10:31

  • But this doesn't remove mysql.user table. How to remove everything and start new root account? – moderns Jul 15 '14 at 12:29
  • I still get " root@Debian-76-wheezy-64-LAMP ~ # mysql Warning: Using unique option prefix pass instead of password is deprecated and will be removed in a future release. Please use the full name instead. ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: YES) Any idea how to fix please ? – daslicht Sep 11 '14 at 13:17
  • @moderns To remove all the existing users and data, you have to remove the Mysql data directories after you have removed mysqld. You can find the data directories in /var/lib/mysql. The next time you install mysql you will start with a fresh install with no legacy data. – bluecollarcoder Nov 26 '14 at 19:47

Complete official guide to (un)install at https://dev.mysql.com/doc/mysql-apt-repo-quick-guide/en/ – Val Martinez Apr 27 '16 at 15:33
  • tried the mentioned steps still for the command : sudo dpkg -l | grep -i mysql it lists the mysql packages. The output is same as mentioned by user @Bakepi – team Dec 25 '21 at 06:51

Just a little addition to the answer of @dAm2k :

In addition to sudo apt-get remove --purge mysql\*

I've done a sudo apt-get remove --purge mariadb\*.

I seems that in the new release of debian (stretch), when you install mysql it install mariadb package with it.

Hope it helps.

Your solution worked for me, while the accepted answer did not, in my case. Had recently installed LAMP on Raspbian Sketch Lite and it came with MariaDB and since it was still running, the accepted answer solution did not get rid of it and generated an error, while yours completely uninstalled all the modules and I could reinstall it without any problems. Thx. – that-ben Dec 11 '17 at 20:47

This needs to be the answer for sure. Do note that the command also asks you to keep or remove all databases. – A1rPun Oct 26 '18 at 16:14
