PCI Express (Peripheral Component Interconnect Express)

PCI Express (Peripheral Component Interconnect Express) is a computer expansion bus standard designed to replace the older PCI, PCI-X, and AGP bus standards. PCIe has numerous improvements over the aforementioned bus standards, including higher maximum system bus throughput, lower I/O pin count and smaller physical footprint, better performance-scaling for bus devices, a more detailed error detection and reporting mechanism, and native hot-plug functionality. More recent revisions of the PCIe standard support hardware I/O virtualization.

We unfortunately have a very expensive ($10K) full-length 5 volt PCI card that we would like to use in the same system as another expensive PCI-X card. As luck would have it, it seems that PCI-X is not backwards compatible with 5v PCI cards. It…

PCIe gen3 x4 card in PCIe gen2 x8 slot - full performance possible?

To my understanding, a gen3 x4 slot is equal to a gen2 x8 slot in terms of speed. I assume that by default a gen3 card can not get full speed, because the gen3 card is only x4 physically, and therefore will only use half of an x8 slot. Plus…
