Snmpd is running. I checked status by running snmpwalk(snmpwalk -v 1 -c public localhost).

I ran this in order to get CPU info:

snmpget -v 1 -c "community" localhost .1.3.6.1.4.1.2021.10.1.3.1

But I get an error:

Timeout: No Response from localhost

Do I need to enable something in order to enable SNMP monitoring?

You'll need to make sure that "localhost" can use that community string "community." and it doesn't look like you've defined the community string "community" at all in your snmpd.conf file.

For an initial test, add rwcommunity community localhost as the first line in "/etc/snmp/snmpd.conf" and restart the service.

This should allow you to do an SNMP walk from the local host only.

If you want to be able to read SNMP data from elsewhere, simply change "localhost" to the IP address or host name of the server you'll be connecting from. In a production environment, you may wish to make the SNMP more secure by making it Read-only, using a more obscure community string, or utilizing v2c/v3 secuirty definitions. For testing though this should get you going.

  • I edit the question with this try. didnt work. i try to query my computer from my computer. – Avihai Marchiano Aug 22 '12 at 15:08
  • Ohhhh, I'm sorry, I miss-typed - make sure you edit snmpd.com, not snmp.conf :S sorry about that, I edited my answer – Univ426 Aug 22 '12 at 15:24
  • I added the original my conf file to the question. I try to add it as first raw didnt help. Thank you!!!! – Avihai Marchiano Aug 22 '12 at 15:42
  • Yeah, so looking at your snmpd.conf file, the community string "community" isn't defined at all. It does look like a v2 community string, "public" is defined. Did adding "rwcommunity community localhost" right to the top of the file help? – Univ426 Aug 22 '12 at 15:50
  • Nope didnt help :( – Avihai Marchiano Aug 22 '12 at 15:54
  • Hmm, the "Timeout" error almost always indicates one of two things - an incorrectly configured community string, or SNMP isn't running. If you're still having problems, I'd take a look at this https://access.redhat.com/knowledge/docs/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/6/html/Deployment_Guide/sect-System_Monitoring_Tools-Net-SNMP-Configuring.html and make sure the SNMP service is running. Hopefully that helps :S – Univ426 Aug 22 '12 at 16:11
  • Add this to the answer - after change call to service snmpd restart, so i will mark it as correct. Thank you – Avihai Marchiano Aug 22 '12 at 16:20
  • Ahhh, I was going to ask if you did that haha, sorry about that, glad it worked out – Univ426 Aug 22 '12 at 16:21

See from /etc/default/snmpd if snmpd is listening only at 127.0.0.1 or at an actual network interface. Take a look at SNMPDOPTS line there.
