SSHing to my server return a "This account is currently not available." error

Question

First of all, the server was working fine and I connected on it quite often but all of the sudden by database server stop responding and I tried to ssh to the server to see what was wrong and I got kicked out by this error "This account is currently not available.".

I've tried to connect using my user account and the root account and both return the same error.

Since it's a EC2 instance, is there anything I can do but to trash it and restart a new one?

The message This account is currently not available comes from the nologin command. Often, system or daemon accounts will be set up with this as their shell (instead of e.g. bash) to prevent interactive login.

The SSH logs show that your certificate-based authentication is working fine, but you are being kicked out because of having your shell set to nologin in /etc/passwd. I can't think why anyone would do this deliberately to an interactive account, especially to the root account.

I suggest you try to log in with any other user accounts you might have. Otherwise, due to the lack of single-user mode access on EC2, you're probably out of luck and will have to start again.

Given the fact that I am supposedly the only person with an access on the server and that I didn't change the policy and it was working fine the day before. I have a bad feeling about this. — Julien Grenier, May 29 '11 at 04:16
