Update: it works when sending to a domain that the server handles. As this is a shared hosting server, it contains several domains. For example, domain1.com and domain2.com. If I specify the recipient to be somebody@domain2.com, I receive the email

A week passed googling and browsing in serverfault without success. So, here's my last chance to fix this.

I have a powershell script that sends an email to some recipients when backup job is finished. It works fine using an smtp server such as smtp2go.com. However, I need to make it work using a postfix/dovecot hosted in digitalocean.

Here's the script:

########## TO CHANGE ##########
$from = "backup@loche.com.ar"
$to = "recipient@domain.com"
$subject = "Test"
###############################
$SMTPServer = "mail2.loche.com.ar"
$SMTPClient = New-Object Net.Mail.SmtpClient($SmtpServer)
$SMTPClient.EnableSsl = $true
$SMTPClient.Credentials = New-Object System.Net.NetworkCredential("backup@loche.com.ar", "password")
$mailMessage = New-Object System.Net.Mail.MailMessage($from, $to)
$mailMessage.subject = $subject
$mailMessage.isBodyHTML = $true
$mailMessage.body = $body

#Added to remove certificate validation check, if needed
[System.Net.ServicePointManager]::ServerCertificateValidationCallback = { return $true }

$SMTPClient.Send($mailMessage)

The backup server IS NOT in the same network as the postfix server. Actually, the postfix server is in digitalocean and I have many backup servers from many customers where I need to use same credentials to monitor the backup results.

The error I get is:

Jun 18 11:22:17 loche postfix/submission/smtpd[1537904]: NOQUEUE: reject: RCPT from unknown[x.x.x.x]: 554 5.7.1 <recipient@domain.com>: Relay access denied; from=<backup@loche.com.ar> to=<recipient@domain.com> proto=ESMTP helo=<computername>

I allowed in mynetworks = 0.0.0.0 but it acted as an open relay and of course, nobody wants that.

  • Hmm. It doesn't look like you set the port to 587 in your code. That's the only potential problem I can see at this point. – Michael Hampton Jun 18 '21 at 17:48
  • I tried with this script also: Send-MailMessage –to –from –subject "testing456" –body "this is a secure test" –smtpserver -port 587 -UseSsl -Credential (Get-Credential). still same response. – Daniel Grunblatt Jun 18 '21 at 17:54
  • Those Postfix log entries do not correspond to such a test. – Michael Hampton Jun 18 '21 at 17:57
  • this is the log when sending with that script: Jun 18 14:59:38 loche postfix/submission/smtpd[1606260]: NOQUEUE: reject: RCPT from unknown[x.x.x.x]: 554 5.7.1 : Relay access denied; from= to= proto=ESMTP helo= – Daniel Grunblatt Jun 18 '21 at 18:02
  • Now it looks like your script just isn't trying to log in. – Michael Hampton Jun 18 '21 at 18:47
  • what if postfix does not recognize the way this script sends the credentials? do you have any script using any language to trigger an email? – Daniel Grunblatt Jun 18 '21 at 21:19
