Genus of flowering plant in the family Gesneriaceae.
The genus Sinningia (Family Gesneriaceae) contains about 65 species of tuberous perennial herbs native to Central and Southern America.
Sinningia usually grow on rocks and cliffs. Most are pollinated by hummingbirds or bees, although some species are pollinated by bats or moths. Flower color varies according to the pollinator: most are bright colored, but those pollinated by moths have large white fragrant flowers.
For historical reasons, the most well known species, Sinningia speciosa, is often sold as Gloxinia although it is not a member of the true genus Gloxinia (the latter has scaly rhizomes rather than tubers).
