Small, young onion bulbs that are planted like seeds.
Onion sets are onions which were planted from seed the year before. They are typically planted very densely, producing stunted small onion bulbs. These are then sold/distributed for propagation.
The advantage of using onion sets is that they have had a 'head start' and will mature more quickly. This is particularly useful when the growing season is short (e.g. northern climates due to limited day length; and south latitudes due to excessive heat in summer).
Use this tag for all onions questions which are specific to using onion-sets. Do not use it for questions about seed propagation or general onion questions.
