Questions tagged [habaneros]

Common name for cultivars of Capsicum chinensis, a very hot chili pepper, family Solanaceae.

Habaneros are the hottest chili peppers that are readily available from grocers and garden centers, although there are hotter peppers available from specialist nurseries (e.g. the Indian 'naga' types).

They are cultivars of Capsicum chinensis - different to most chili peppers which are C. annuum. They also have a distinctive rounded pod shape. Although the term is often used for all cultivars of C. chinensis many authors distinguish between Habaneros and Scotch Bonnet due to their different shapes.
