Gardenia is a genus of 142 species of flowering plants in the Rubiaceae ("coffee") family. They are native to tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, Asia, Australasia, and Oceania.

Gardenias are evergreen shrubs and small trees that range in height from 1m to 15m. Leaves are broad, dark green and glossy. Flowers are typically solitary or in small clusters. They are white or pale yellow. Many species have strongly scented flowers, and they are primarily grown for their scent.
