African violets, genus Saintpaulia (family Gesneriaceae) contains six species of herbeceous perennials. They are native to Kenya and Tanzania, where some species are endangered. They are not related to violets, but have a superficial resemblance.
Leaves are fleshy and hairy. Flowers are typically 2-3 cm diameter with five petals, and grow in clusters of 3-10 on slender stalks. Wild flowers colors include violet, purple, pale blue, or white.
