Cooking some mussels.

A lot of them seem to have a elliptical crease/crack that follows the ridges on the shell around the top and bottom of the mussel. Does anyone know if this is a crack or is it a feature of the shell?

Some don't have it, some have it more pronounced, some have it more subtly.

I thought it might just be a feature, but it could also be a crack if their shells are weaker at particular points.

Finally, should I cook or discard them?

Thanks!

So what is it - a crack (= open slit) or a crease (= irregularity, yet closed)? – Stephie May 22 '20 at 18:07
  • I have found some with obviously cracks, which are open. Some with cracks, but remain closed, and have determined that some have 'creases'/irregularities. – am4ci May 22 '20 at 18:17

  • Maybe include some pictures? – Kat May 23 '20 at 15:58
  • Pictures please. From the text you may even speak about totally normal shells... – Alchimista Aug 27 '20 at 10:42
