From Middle High German ougenblick (“quick glance”), corresponding to Auge (“eye”) + -n- + Blick (“glance”). Cognate to Yiddish אויגנבליק (oygnblik), Luxembourgish Abléck, Dutch ogenblik, Danish øjeblik, Swedish ögonblick, Norwegian øyeblikk, Icelandic augnablik. Compare English eyeblink.

- Both ways of stress are common and are used depending on the rhythm of the phrase. The interjection virtually always has final stress.
