< St. Nicholas < Volume 40 < Number 7

I

The fair maid who,
the first of May,
Goes to the fields
at break of day,
And washes in dew
from the hawthorn
tree,
Will ever after
handsome be.

II

Here am I,
little jumping Joan,
When nobody’s
with me,
I'm always alone.
