In the episode, the Doctor (Peter Capaldi), Bill (Pearl Mackie), Nardole (Matt Lucas), and Missy (Michelle Gomez) answer a distress call from a gigantic ship trying to escape a black hole. It is the first episode of a two-part story which concludes in the following episode, "The Doctor Falls". "World Enough and Time" is the first multi-Master episode in the show's televised history, as it features both Missy and an earlier incarnation (John Simm) last seen in the 2009–2010 serial "The End of Time". It also serves as an origin story for the Cybermen, and features the return of the original Mondasian Cybermen, first seen on-screen in the 1966 serial The Tenth Planet, which was the Cybermen's debut.
