Vernazza's name is derived from the Latin adjective verna, meaning "native". The aptly named indigenous wine, vernaccia ("local" or "ours"), helped give birth to the village's moniker. It is one of I Borghi più belli d'Italia ("The most beautiful villages of Italy").
