The first Trader Joe's store was opened in 1967 by founder Joe Coulombe in Pasadena, California. The chain was sold to Aldi founder Theo Albrecht in 1979, who owned it until his death in 2010, when ownership passed to his heirs. The company has offices in Monrovia, California, and Boston, Massachusetts.

In the 2020s, Trader Joe's has been accused of union busting in relation to efforts by workers at its stores to unionize. The first unionized Trader Joe's store was in 2022. In 2024, Trader Joe's joined Elon Musk in a high-profile lawsuit to have the National Labor Relations Board, which enforces U.S. labor law in relation to collective bargaining and unfair labor practices, deemed unconstitutional.
