Described as a "schoolboy prodigy" and a "classy left-hander" who could destroy the best of attacks by Cricinfo writer Partab Ramchand, he made his first-class debut before he turned 15. As an 18-year-old he scored a historic century at Lord's in 1967, hitting the last two balls of the match for six to secure for victory for the Indian Schoolboys against England Schoolboys. He scored a century on Test debut against New Zealand in 1976. He played 10 Test matches and 145 first-class matches.
