The etymology of the genus name derives from the two Ancient Greek words ψάμμος (psámmos), meaning "sand", and μῦς (mûs), meaning "mouse, rat".
The complete nuclear DNA genome of one Psamomys species, P. obesus, has been sequenced in 2017.
